Excerpt from The Quaker Colonies A Chronicle of the Proprietors of the Delaware

The first law against the Quakers in Massachu setts was passed in 1656, and between that date and 1660 four of the sect were hanged, one of them a woman, Mary Dyer. Though there were no other hangings, many Quakers were punished by whipping and banishment. In other colonies, notably New York, fines and banishment were not uncommon. Such treatment forced the Quakers, against the will of many of them, to seek a tract of land and found a colony of their own. T 0 such a course there appeared no alternative, unless they were determined to establish their religion solely by martyrdom.

This is a very well written history of the settlement of the Delaware both the New Jersey side as well as the Pennsylvania side. The style of from academia of the early 20th century, but holds up very well. The book is one of a series of 50 history books published by Yale in the teens and twenties of the last century. I read it to my blind 98 year old father-in-law from South Jersey who is a history buff, and he loved it. It covers much more than just the Quakers because the immigration then included German protestant sects, Anglican churchmen, Scotch-Irish, Swedes as well as Quakers. He points out how these various groups dealt the the Native Americans each in their own way, and how they dealt with each other. One of the many interesting things covered is the English court politics that led to granting of land to the proprietors in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Having these docs available is fantastic for genealogists and history buffs.
Great for anyone interested in the history of Quakers in the US. My Quaker ancestors settled in West Jersey and I found it interesting to learn more about what they faced when coming to the US.
a short book that was entertaining and informative to read. I have referred to it several times since
I finished reading it. Especially helpful since my ancestors were among the early proprietors of Delaware.
Good Book
I really liked it. I read every page and found it very interesting. As a Quaker myself a lot of the readings I have access to are usually somewhat biased or I would assume that they are. This book shows the positive contributions as well as the failures of the Quakers in the US. Again, I enjoyed it very much.
This is a very nice, well written book--rather long on narrative and lovely descriptions, but a bit short on politics and institutions.

This is partly a matter of Fishers very easy writing style, which delivers much detail so easily (and often briefly) that you hardly notice. There is a lot of good. work evident here.
This book is an interesting perspective on an aspect of American colonial history that doesn't get a lot of coverage, the history of Quakers in America. Much more is told of the history of the Puritans in New England, but the history of the Quakers in colonial America is just as important to an understanding of colonial America. I knew that Pennsylvania had been a Quaker colony, but that was the extent of my knowledge, this book filled in the gaps.
