An entire city falls asleep…

…and when Doctor Andrew Strauss and the army move in to investigate, the sleepers stand up to defend a single woman as a cohesive group, and mind. As Strauss’ covert past and foretold future clash, the twisted fairytale truth behind this event will leave you breathless.

From the imagination of the award-winning and bestselling author of Who’s Been…? and RED (optioned for film and turned into an award-winning feature script), this chilling reworking of another well-loved fairy tale reads like a heady mix of The Andromeda Strain, Inception, Outbreak, and Quartermass, and is a tale that’s bound to delight genre fans the world over.

The sleepy English locality of Middletown is about to get even sleepier, as a strange malady starts to affect the population. It spreads quickly, causing the authorities to quarantine this small city, and seek out the only person who might be able to help Doctor Andrew Strauss. However, Strauss has a secret, one that has linked him to this place all his life, one that has linked him to a particular person there, though he doesn’t yet know who. But he’s not the only one hiding things – and as he ventures into Middletown to collect samples with an army escort, a mixture of UK and US troops, cracks soon begin to appear in the operation. Especially when his team comes up against the most terrifying threat humankind has ever known.

Interview with the author

So what makes this Sci-fi Adventure so special?

Paul Kane One Hollywood producer also called this one ‘The Andromeda Strain meets Inception’, which I think is a fairly accurate description.

Tell us more about your lead character, Dr Andrew Strauss.

Paul Kane Strauss is an arrogant, womanizing know-it-all… But he’s the only one with the knowledge to save the people of Middletown – who have all fallen asleep, the victims of some unknown virus. The military have called on him to venture in and find out what’s going on, accompanied by a joint US/UK squad of soldiers. Of course, Strauss has his own reasons for going on this mission, which you’ll discover if you read the book. Andrew Straus is single-minded, plus he’s also self-aware and a genre fan…so much so that he recognises he’s a kind of Quatermass figure in this story.

Why should readers give twisted fairy tale novella a try?

Paul Kane If you like a heady blend of horror, science fiction, dark fantasy and fairy-tales – as this book is also a modern retelling of Sleeping Beauty – we’ve got you covered. It moves at quite a pace, hitting the ground running and never pausing until you get to the end, just what you might expect of a thriller of this kind. It’s got some great characters, from the obnoxious British soldier Timms to Suzanne – my version of Sleeping Beauty herself – the lynchpin of the entire book. There should be enough in here to satisfy most readers of genre fiction.

Sleepers eBook Paul Kane David Moody

Good story, may have been better as a series that explains a bit more. Or just a bit more insight into the "sleeping sickness" instead of all the hints, may have given the story an extra 'bite'

Sleepers eBook Paul Kane David Moody Reviews

"If you take Quatermass Experiment (and Xperiment), Quatermass and The Pit, Day of the Triffids, Night of the Triffids, Outbreak, The Andromeda Strain, Lifeforce, Inception -- throw them all into a blender, grind into tasty chucks, and you'll come out with something like Paul Kane's novella Sleeper(s). This page-turner will make you scream, laugh and think -- sometimes all in the same sentence. Highly recommended"

- Michael McCarty author of Lost Girl of the Lake and Return of the Scream Queen
There is a comparison to the great John Wyndham on the front of the book and I have to say that there is a lot to like here with this short novel. There is some great atmosphere created and it has a real English country small town horror vibe to it, and I really like that. Marks also for the lead character being named Andrew Strauss. I love my cricket. Good read. 4 stars
Sleeper(s), by Paul Kane, is a rapidly moving tale of nature and science gone awry. Add in booze, sex, cultural diversity, and political subterfuge, and I believe Mr. Kane has something here for every one. Some parts of this story are amazingly in line with my own thoughts regarding the possibilities of the evils that governments sometimes engineer, or might, given the chance. I am not a believer in having Prologues in books, tending to feel they give too much of the story away. However, the one here was skillfully used and added to the book. Even better than that was the Epilogue. This was a superb piece of prose having me say,"Look at the possibilities!" That being said, I am hoping that Mr. Kane sees fit to share a second book with us. This could be a series.

Paul Kane is a superb author. I most highly recommend you read Sleeper(s).
Dr. Strauss is about to visit a quarantined city in the hope that he can develop a treatment for the highly contagious, mysterious aliment that has struck every man, woman, and child who lives there. The problem is that he has to work closely with someone on this assignment who has every reason to distrust him.

The vivid descriptions of what is happening to the residents of Middletown paint such a horrifying picture of the changes they're undergoing that I nearly jumped out of my skin when a piece of my hair brushed against my neck as I read that scene. Every assumption I'd made about what was actually happening in Middletown was thrown out the window as Dr. Strauss begins collecting samples and attempting to find a cure.

This story was not marketed as a romance in any way, so I was quite surprised to meet characters in a love triangle. Their conflicted feelings about their predicament are not central to the main plot and there are no sex scenes, but the love triangle was mentioned often enough that I briefly wondered if the publisher had mislabeled this book. It would have been helpful for me if the blurb hinted at this particular subplot as it is not one of the traditional tropes of the horror genre.

Mr. Kane ultimately had good reasons for including the scenes that initially confused me, though. By the climax he weaves all of the subplots together in ways I never would have predicted they would fit. The final glimpse of this world was the perfect capstone to this eerie, rule-bending tale.

Sleeper(s) kept me up late last night. I'd recommend this book in particular to readers who love techno-thrillers and science fiction that is heavily influenced by current scientific knowledge.

Imagine if Freddy Krueger bottled up his particular brand of terror and shipped it off to England, just for the hell of it. Well, what do you think would happen? Sleeper(s) by Paul Kane is not exactly like that, but if I close my eyes and imagine Freddy Krueger with a better – eviller – marketer, I can see him coming up with something similar to what’s in Paul Kane’s novella. In other words Nine, ten, never sleep again …

evilestSleeper(s), set in Middletown (somewhere in the UK), is a haunting tale of a whole town suddenly falling asleep … for no apparent reason. The UK and US military (reluctantly working together to get to the bottom of this illness) bring in the help of renowned doctor, Dr. Andrew Strauss – who’s been waiting for this case his whole life. The thing is, there are more dangers in the quarantined town than they thought possible, which includes some violent sleepwalking scenes, sleep-falling scenes, the sleeping undead scenes, and some sleep-killing scenes. Sounds intriguing, yes? Well, it is. Sleeper(s) is fast-paced, contrary to the sleeping sickness plot, and the characters are realistic (even the psychotic ones).

I can’t actually say what part I didn’t like about Sleeper(s), because of spoilers, but let’s just say that “the revelation” part of the story could have been a little less trite. Strauss is an unlucky a-hole, and I love him for it, but his connection to a certain person in Middletown should have been rethought.

That being said, I still enjoyed Sleeper(s) by Paul Kane a lot. It’s got some sci-fi elements, a great deal of horror, some interesting characters, and best of all, it’s a novella, so it’s a fun little book to read before bedtime rolls in …
This was a slow story that I thought would never end. And, when I got to the finish, it blew. I will say that the characters were great, but the story itself was lacking in action. No, I wouldn't recommend this story.
Good story, may have been better as a series that explains a bit more. Or just a bit more insight into the "sleeping sickness" instead of all the hints, may have given the story an extra 'bite'
